The Little Moments of life that inspire: Journey of a solo game developer (Journal #2)

Good morning dear journal (and to you, dear reader)

This morning started off more tired than usual, but it ended up being something beautiful. For some reason, I woke up during the night. I checked the clock and it was somewhere around 3:30 AM. There was a weird sound coming from the lake, which I couldn’t recognize while still waking up. As two of my kids were still sleeping in the car, my “daddy instincts” took over thinking that I should go check them.

"It felt like magic. Like I was living in a movie. All because I was woken up by this beautiful creature to this enchanted meeting of ours."

I silently stepped out from the door, while my third kid was changing his position and hid himself under the thick blanket. Snoring calmly.

The lake was absolutely beautiful during the night. It was like a giant mirror, which enabled the sound to travel long distances. That weird sound seemed to be coming from a swan flying somewhere far away.

I went to check the car and everything was as it should be. Two little boys sleeping calmly. The night was silent, but at the same time I could recognize dozens of different birds singing, which you really don’t hear during the daytime.

The swan singing seemed to be coming closer. I went to the pier to take a closer look and there it was. A beautiful, big swan flying alone on top of the mirror-like lake. To me, it seemed like it noticed me and turned its course straight to me. It landed around 10 meters away from the pier with a calm splash.

"As a storyteller and game developer, I’m rather confident in saying that this kind of magical moment will (or need to) appear in my upcoming stories and/or games."

And there we were. Looking at each other in the silence of the night. I couldn’t handle myself. I sat down on the pier’s end slowly, while smiling like a madman.

I have no clue if the moment lasted for some seconds, or minutes. But we just sat there. The swan was looking at me and I straight back to him. After the meeting of ours, the swan took his aim to the horizon and started his takeoff. Flapping the wings strongly on the lake surface, leading into rapid running on top of the giant mirror and then. Takeoff. It didn’t say a thing anymore. It just slowly disappeared to the horizon.

It felt like magic. Like I was living in a movie. All because I was woken up by this beautiful creature to this enchanted meeting of ours.

As a storyteller and game developer, I’m rather confident in saying that this kind of magical moment will (or need to) appear in my upcoming stories and/or games.

So, note to myself: Remember to stop every now and then to the moment. Those little moments may be the most inspiring things you’ll encounter.

Happy developing everyone!
